Is Seborrheic Dermatitis Permanent?
Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic relapsing erythematous and scaling dermatosis that affects areas of the skin rich in sebaceous glands. It most commonly occurs on the face and scalp but can also affect other parts of the body, such as the chest, back, and groin. The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown but it is thought to be due to a combination of factors, including genetics, hormones, and yeast that live on the skin. Although there is no cure for seborrheic dermatitis, it can be managed with medicated shampoos, creams, and lotions. In severe cases, oral medications may be necessary.
Seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be caused by an overgrowth of a yeast that naturally lives on the skin. This yeast feeds on the oils produced by the skin, which can lead to inflammation and irritation. Other factors that may contribute to seborrheic dermatitis include stress, cold weather, hormonal changes, and certain medications.
There is no cure for seborrheic dermatitis, but there are ways to control the symptoms. Treatments include over-the-counter dandruff shampoos, prescription strength dandruff shampoos, corticosteroids, antifungals, and light therapy. In severe cases, oral medications may be necessary.
With treatment, most people with seborrheic dermatitis are able to get the condition under control. The goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation and itching and prevent flare-ups. In some cases, seborrheic dermatitis may go into remission for extended periods of time. However, it is important to continue with treatment even when the symptoms are gone to help prevent a relapse.
